Nicknamed "the city of the Thousand" due to the large number of volunteers from Bergamo who took part in the expedition of the Thousand led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, it is a splendid destination in Northern Italy with its medieval architecture, an extraordinary local cuisine, a fascinating historic center that it houses the Cathedral of Bergamo, the Romanesque Abbey, the great Chapel with 18th century frescoes by Tiepolo.
A walk around the city walls is a must: from the sixteenth-century Porta Sant'Agostino, surmounted by the lion of Venice, to Porta Sant'Alessandro, near which stands the citadel built by the Visconti in the fourteenth century, up to Porta San Giacomo, along the bulwarks that strengthened the circle of the walls.
