Trieste is the capital of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in the north-east of Italy. City of Porto occupies a thin strip of land between the Adriatic and the Slovenian border, which runs along the Karst plateau, characterized by limestone. Italian, Austro-Hungarian and Slovenian influences are evident throughout the city, which includes a medieval old town and a neoclassical district from the Austrian era.
